Two Images, Night Photography, I Phone 13 and Leica

by Jon Katz

Tonight, I had a chance to explore some new options with night photography. The first photo as the snow fell lightly was taken by an Iphone 13 Pro Max. Apple continues to make enormous advances in the night capability of its new phones.

This shot was taken with Apple’s fusion technology; the camera takes a score of rapid-fire photos and fuses them into one clear picture. I can’t say

I know how they do it, but it is pretty amazing and has me drooling about the possibilities.

The second shot (below) was taken with my Leica on autofocus. As always, the Leica looks for atmosphere. In the dark light, the camera focuses on the nearest object – in this case, the thin man – and softens the background.

This gives the shot more atmosphere but minor detail. The feeling is almost spooky. One isn’t better than the other for me, they are just different, and the more I experience with both, the quicker I’ll understand how to get the feeling and detail that I want.

The Leica shot makes me think the Tin Man is about to go shovel snow.

Neither of these shots would have been possible for me even a year ago.

  1. I began by not feeling much pleasure in your black-white photos but I have gradually begun to appreciate them as I learn to look at them intelligently. Thought I should mention this.!

  2. Didn’t you have a very high end Canon DSLR? It definitely would have produced either of these images. I know my Nikon can, with less noise and better focus than the iPhone photo did.

    1. Dana, I don’t have that camera I traded it in for the Leica, and no, it could not have done either of those things.

    1. Speak for yourself Dana, you are perhaps more skilled than I am. The folks I take lessons from disagree with you, and so do I. I write about my own experience, I can’t speak for yours and I don’t intend to argue with you about it.If you are right, good for you.
