A Good Start To A Meaningful Day. Off To Bishop Maginn With A Car Stuffed With Prom Gowns.

by Jon Katz

I am especially fond of this plant above. They used to call it the “Wandering Jew” before word got out that the Nazis used it to attack and libel Jews. It’s now called Spiderwort.

I identify with it, as I was a Wandering Jew myself for a long time until I got saner and was able to better control my own anger, find love and settle down. I moved about 14 times before I wore myself out.

No good man can do much good without a good woman nearby.

Today, Maria and I are wandering to Albany with a car stuffed with beautiful prom dresses donated by Tania Woodward of the Mansion and some friends of hers. It’s a good and fun mission.

My day began on a high note. I received these two messages, one online and one in my post office mailbox. I appreciate them both very much. These are two good people with open hearts, I’m grateful to know them.

I hope to return with some fun photographs. Bishop Maginn is a special place, it will always be in my heart. I want very much to be one of the Good Men, and that’s never easy, but always worthwhile. To be called a Good Man is the highest praise for me. More later.

Hey Jon:

I am so very pleased that you went ahead with the Prom for and with the students / faculty of Bishop Maginn. I was afraid that the donations would fall short ….because of the timing and the war on Ukraine. Yet I was hoping you could find a way to make their dreams a reality. I was so dismayed when I first read your blog about the school closing. You have been able to convey what a wonder and lifesaver this school has meant for so many of these students. And having a prom for all of them….I think is perfectly wonderful, as is the Army of Good and you / Maria, of course. Bravo to you and a ‘high-five’ to that Jesus that inspired you.

Dear Jon, Enclosed is a check for $50. Half is for the Mansion/Refugee fund, and  half to support your writing

In the fall of 2020, your writing was the sanest I could find about the election. Between your blog and the help of a therapist, I have been able to tame the seething anger about our former President and the chaos following the election. I also appreciate your thoughts about the Supreme Court’s latest hijinx. You are one of the Good Men.

Thank you, Paula.

  1. Margaret and Paula took my thoughts out of my head and put them ‘on paper’.
BTW: The Cactus plant seems to have grown an Angel. Probably keeping company with the
    ‘Wondering Jew’.
