Poppies And Apple Trees: Composition. The Art Part

by Jon Katz

This photo is about many different things to me – color, light, the monochrome – but most of all, it was an exercise in photo composition.

I liked the balance in the photo, the poppies, the poppy pods, and the apple tree as a background tying the garden to the farm.

If there is art here, this is where it comes in. Imagining more than what is staring at me in the viewfinder. That’s the art part.

    1. This is why I never read design books Orza, I prefer to make up my own mind. Golden Ration sounds like something on the menu of a Chinese restaurant..

      1. ‘Golden Ratio’, ‘Rule of Thirds’, and others…all meant to be broken. Love this shot as I love poppies. I usually shoot them for their vivid colors, but shooting them in b&w brings out so many details.

        1. Thanks Dot, the purists sometimes drive me crazy, lots of rules and do’s and don’ts. for me the joy of creativity is experimenting and trying new things..i love the b and w, not for every photo, but when it scores, its amazing..
