Good Morning: Talking To Ravens. “The Raven Spread Its Glossy Wings And Departed With Hope…”

by Jon Katz

Ravens are the birds I’ll miss most when I die. If only the darkness into which we must look were composed of the black light of their limber intelligence. If only we did not have to die at all. Instead, become ravens.”
― Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum.

It was only a matter of time before Maria started talking to Ravens and crows and listening to their responses. Every morning, she sits on the back steps with a barn cat curled up behind her, and she listens to the ravens and talks to them.

There was a time when this would have shocked or puzzled me, or perhaps I might make light of it, even ridicule it.

Life and love have beaten some sense and wisdom into me, and now, when Maria comes in and talks about ravens, I ask her what she thinks they are saying.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow up, open my eyes and heart, and see the world, not hide from it.

The raven spread its glossy wings and departed with hope.” -“Cecilia Dart-Thornton

  1. I talk to the Turkey Vultures who cruise past in the sky over my head. This, of course, makes me weird to others. Turkey Vultures are wonderful creatures-maligned and misunderstood due partially to their “job” as nature’s garbage men and partly to their appearance. I have known several personally. They are wise, gentle, social birds.

  2. My husband feeds the crows peanuts after he gets back from the gym. They recognize his car and begin to congregate when he is about a block away. He doesn’t always come straight home from the gym so it isn’t a time thing. They are very demanding and absolutely wonderful. We also have ravens where I live. Love them all.
