Americana: The First Farmer’s Markets

by Jon Katz

Today’s farmer’s markets are sometimes elaborate, with many stalls, goat cheese, cupcakes,  wood-fired pizza, and singers and bands.

Down the road, I found one of the original farmer’s markets, trucks the farmers drove around with corn and vegetables in baskets in the trunk.

They rode them all over town, and people could come out of their houses to buy what they needed. Everyone got to know everyone else, the farmers would bring the things their customers like and wanted.

Farmers loved their trucks and decorated them with signs and flowers; they were often the thing that got them through difficult years.

  1. Growing up in Brooklyn I remember my mother buying fruit and vegetables from a truck. I especially loved summer fruits. I remember how fuzzy the peaches were and sweet. Todays fruits are a sad comparison. Oh, and everything they sold was seasonal.

  2. Believe it or not, fruit and veggie men in pick up trucks are still common in Alabama. Pretty sure they are in other places as well.
Peaches, plums, tomatoes, watermelons, squash, etc, etc. We love fried green tomatoes & that’s the best place to get them. Big softball sized firm green ones that fry up great. Super with remoulade sauce or makes an awesomely unique

Mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm-mmh! Just flat out melt in your mouth delicious.
I’d love to cook you up a batch sometime. Battered up like fried chicken with a generous amount of Cajun seasoning.
Can’t you just taste them now?!?
I just may have to hunt a couple down tomorrow. Sounds like the perfect side for the tamales I’m making. I already have my pork, masa dough, chili sauce & corn husks made today. Just assemble & steam for an hour or so.
Tamales, frijoles, & fried green tomatoes. Sounds like the perfect Sunday dinner.
My weight has been 125, +/- 5lbs for the past 20 yrs so a little lard shouldn’t kill me.
Sorry to bore you with all this. Wish I could FedEx you a plate.
I love reading everything you share.
