Waiting For Hay. They Wanted Food, Not Photos

by Jon Katz

I don’t think sheep even notice cold – they don’t like ice storms – they stayed in the Pole Barn during yesterday’s ice and snow show. When I open the gate, they come rushing out, eager to eat since the grass is finally out of their reach.

When I had Red and Izzy, they ran away at the sight of me. Now, they ignore me, but several seem to think the camera is food and try to eat it. That could get ugly.

They were disappointed to see Zinnia, me, and my camera, but they had plenty of grass within minutes. I hope there will still be some grazing time. Before climate change, the winter would come in late October or early November, and ice and snow stayed on the ground until late Spring.

This has changed so much. We already had warm days up until a week ago, which was a jarring difference. Lately, the hard winter comes in February and stays until late March. Our sheep have plenty of excellent and fresh hay, but they do miss grazing.

If they can’t see it, they can’t eat it. The good news is that they are healthy, and their wool is growing like crazy. This is a testament to good hay. They might get some grain later in the day for energy.
