Just Down The Road, Carol’s Corner And Cones. Maria’s Instant Photography

by Jon Katz

Carol’s Corner (and Cones), a beautiful new florist and gardening store (photo above), opened last year just down the road from us and has expanded dramatically. There are some wonderful flowers in there.

I went in today to look for flowers for my garden to put on the back porch until it warms up a bit and I took some pictures. I got a few beauties; I have to wait a week or two before putting most of them into bed; it’s still a little cold. I put a petunia out in the bed earlier.

I brought them out in the sent and tried my macro lens on them. I’m still learning how to use it—getting better. I never did a writing group (except for one talk by John Updike) and never joined a photo group.

I  prefer to plow in, experiment, and learn from my mistakes; in any group, someone is always telling people what to do.

That happens whenever there are three humans thrown together for any reason.

I did take a few pictures today; I’ll put a few pictures up in a few minutes.

Maria got an instant camera last year, and she is delving deep into instant photography, a whole other world from mine. It’s challenging and the kind of creative challenge she loves. It’s great having another photographer in the family.

She identifies as an artist, and I respect that. But she has become a first-rate photographer as well as a first-class artist. True creativity has very few founds.

Instant photography is very cool these days; it’s not something for me. But Maria is already doing beautiful work with her camera. I loved her photo of the three tulips that have popped up in our lawn. It is noteworthy, perhaps the most incredible photography going.

Maria studied the light and angle while the hens offered moral support.

It was a quiet and peaceful afternoon; I did what  I was told and rested my foot. Ian McRae is coming for dinner. I thought we might kill each other the first few times we met, but now we are great and enduring buddies.

It’s wonderful to talk with him, I feel like I’m still living in Greenwich Village and working for the Liberation News Service.

  1. Oh wow I had no idea they still make instant cameras!! So fun to use! My favorite fun camera was always a pinhole camera! Super fun images!! There were no negatives to develop….you just develop the photo paper. They still sell them on B&H 🙂
