Portrait: Bud Feels Better

by Jon Katz

Bud is a great dog, full of love, personality, and character. He is also a terrier, which means there will be trouble occasionally. Yesterday he added something awful out in the back; we don’t know what it was.

He was sick, vomiting all day, awful stuff that kept coming and coming. This was the sickest I’ve ever seen him, we were getting worried.

He threw up five or six times and finally crawled into his crate, where he spent the night. He was a wreck. This morning, he is fine. Terriers are nothing, if not hardy and tough.

He was sweet Bud this morning, abashed and recovering, a little shaken. When he is anxious, his ears lie down. He sat in my lap awhile, and I got the itch to take his portrait. Usually, that would be hard to do; he is so active.

But he was mellow this morning and stood still for me.

Bud has been through a lot in his life, but the sweetness in him survived; you can see it in the portrait. He has a wonderful and expressive face.

  1. Beautiful picture, Jon! Warms my heart to see one of God’s creatures taken care of by a wonderful, loving family.

  2. Our pup ate a begonia petal 2 weeks ago and spent an evening vomiting. Similar symptoms but by bedtime it had stopped and she slept all night in her crate got up fine in the morning. She is part terrier and dachshund. Tough cookies. Stay well Bud.

  3. Could be Bud’s best portrait yet – postcard worthy. (Although I do love the one of Zinnia gnawing on him…)
Glad he’s worked his way thru the misery of eating something initially thought delectable but gastronomically revengeful.

  4. My dog ate the cat’s new litter, which was made from corn cobs. Apparently it smells like corn. He vomited for two days and passed a small bit of the litter. Fortunately he vomited, it could have been an emergency vet visit and surgery to remove a blockage. My dog is part Jack Russell Terrier.

  5. Terriers are definitely the comic relief in the family and keep us on our toes. We have 3 Scottie’s. One of our’s saved us from a grill fire we were unaware of this week. (It was 4 feet from the house). She pitched a fit which is quite unusual for her, and went to the door. (The other two slept).
