Weekend Pantry Trouble. We Want To Get Six Different Cereals To The Pantry For Next Week. All Priced At Dignity Prices: $2, $3, $4. None Are Coming From The Food Bank All Week.

by Jon Katz

(Above, the pantry cereal storage bin; it will be empty by Monday, if not sooner.) We are devoting the entire weekend to stocking as many of the six cereal items below as possible on those shelves as soon as possible. This is the lowest that the cereal storage bin has ever been.)

The Pantry needs some inexpensive but urgent help. These cereals are a huge morale booster for the people who come to the Pantry seeking help. We are the help, that’s what we do, and this time it can be done for just a few dollars. We are making every effort to achieve this whenever possible. Sarah is a master at finding bargains.

Please note that the Food Bank has also reported that it will have no assorted cereal boxes next week, so the more the merrier. The cereal the bank sends is not nearly as healthy or as good-tasting as the food Sarah is trying to get and that the people who come to the food bank want.

Sarah will try to stock whatever cereal arrives, even if she has to ration it…the people coming into the pantry in record numbers are each entitled to one box. In other words, the more the merrier. I might keep this request open over the weekend.

The Cambridge Food Pantry was informed suddenly that the Regional Food Bank would send no assorted cereal boxes for the second week. She and I had an emergency digital meeting (I’m going there this afternoon) to come up with a plan.

It’s a good one. A highly affordable list of six different cereals will fill the shelves and meet the requests of pantry customers.

All of the six cereals on he list cost under four dollars each. Perhaps we can get as many of these as possible to the pantry in the next few days.

Sarah is taking the most determined care to find the healthiest and most sought-after cereals at special prices through our low-price Indignity Program, ensuring pantry members get what they want and need during this challenging time. And it’s getting more challenging by the week.

Your support is greatly appreciated, as always. And more necessary than ever. Let’s help if we can. The slashing of support money for schools and pantries is being felt.

Here are the six assorted boxes that are the healthiest and, by far, the most popular at the pantry. All participants receive special pricing for the Dignity program. Come and see. The pantry can use as many as we can afford to send; they are not getting any of these cereals next week either. If enough boxes arrive in the next couple of days, we’ll remove them from the Wish List.

You can see the Cambridge Pantry Amazon Food Wish List any time, either by clicking on any link here or by clicking on the green buttons at the bottom of every blog post.

Every item on the wish list is urgent now, as the pantry currently has no budget for purchasing some canned goods. The regional food bank offers what it can. (The pantry has to pay for what they ask for, and accept what the bank sends.)

If you have an extra few dollars to spare and want to do some good, review the list and consider sending any item you wish.  If you don’t, we understand, and thanks anyway for caring.

Your food donations will support a worthy and meaningful cause -hunger.

Today, hearty and healthy meals, two of the three incidentals, are $2 at Dignity Special Foods.

Thanks so much for supporting the Cambridge Food Pantry; you are making an enormous difference. Thank you.

This weekend, we hope to donate six different kinds of cereals to the food pantry as soon as possible.

________

The pantry needs these four cereals, as well as at least two more. Please check out the request list above.

  1. Jon, I was educated about the “food desert” that exists in minority and/ or low income neighborhoods……of course I had to go around Atlanta & see if this was true. You already know the answer: it damn sure is! Stores in these areas advertise lotto tickets, hair relaxer, & liquor . And prices are twice what they are in even the least wealthy neighborhoods, at least those that are majority Caucasian . And the billboards show glamorous Black folks drinking expensive liquor, & looking so chic with their straightened hair & toned, beautifully
chiseled bodies. A group of physicians from Grady Hospital used their personal funds & any money they could raise to get a full service , full sized A& P in the center of these low income neighborhoods. Sorry to ramble on, but this education gave me so many answers to questions I’d pushed under the rug for so long.1
