When Fingers Talk. They Sing My Song

by Jon Katz
Fingers

The other night I woke up afraid, and trembling, and Maria asked me, as she often does when this happens, if I knew the fears were not true, not real. I never really know what to say because I do know they are not real, yet I feel them once in awhile. Does any part of you, of your body, know these fears are not true?, she asked me the other morning.

I thought about it, and the answer came to me immediately. Yes, I said. My fingers. My fingers know these fears are not real, not the truth about me or my life. My fingers know the truth. Yes, of course, she said, your fingers. I see  your fingers flying over the keyboard, she said, writing books, blogging, almost apart from you. Of course your fingers know the truth.

This was a somewhat mind-altering revelation for me, because my fingers are my voice, in many ways.

When I have been frightened, my fingers spoke of strength.

When I was without hope, my fingers told of hope and promise.

When I wanted to run or hide, my fingers wrote of courage and conviction.

When I was alone, my fingers wrote of love and connection.

When I was in pieces, my fingers wrote of better times, of promise, of the creative spark.

When I was lost, my fingers sang of a spiritual life, and led me, blind, forward in the dark.

My fingers have always know the truth. That I am good. That I am strong. That noone, noone’s news can take

from me the certain knowledge that life is beautiful, life is a gift.

My fingers have always told my stories, and written their poems, and seen me better than

I have seen myself.

I never thought about my fingers, but I am grateful to them and love and appreciate them

because they are my song, my story, my self, and I never thought to trust them before and to listen to them.

And I will not forget them again.

New Video Camera: Dogs On The Path, Coyotes, Simon’s dumplings

by Jon Katz
New Camera

Got my new video camera, a Canon (broke three Panasonics this year, and I’ve had enough of that). I stumbled across it on the B& H Photo site Friday, not knowing it was “Black Friday” and got $300 off without even asking. It’s a steal for $250, an HD with great sound and from the first video, great clarity. It’s hardy, easy to use, and I decided to inaugurate it by recording a mix – dogs on the path, Simon eating left over vegetable dumplings, chickens clucking, remains of a turkey the coyotes got on the path (just feathers) and some scenes of my wonderful dogs more or less obeying me. Commanding four dogs at once is not a simple thing, but these dogs are quite wonderful, considering they have to put up with my distracted mind.

Come and inaugurate the first video of the new camera with me:

What A Camera Sees

by Jon Katz
What A Camera Sees

I just got my fourth video camera of the year this morning. The Panasonics were just too fragile for the work I do with them, so I got a Canon HD Vixia HFM 40. Trying to figure it out. Some trouble uploading from Imovie. Technology requires almost continuous management for me – Steve Job’s creations unleash my creativity, but are not, in fact trouble free.  I believe the management of modern creative technology requires a psychology all of its own. You need patience, support, and of course, money. I’ll get there.

I’m getting ready to do another edit of the “Frieda and Me: Second Chances” book and then I’ll start preparing for the publication of two more books next year – “Lenore Finds A Friend,” and “Dancing Dogs,” my first fictional short story collection. It’s fun book, offbeat and different for me. But the holiday season will be quiet for me. Just photos and blogging and videos, no book writing. Editor’s orders (agent too). They want me to step back, slow down. I want that also. I’ve got a good stack of books to wade through and the farm is never quiet. Next year, I will start on the Simon book.

Maria and I loved Thanksgiving, the first one we spent entirely on the farm, with one another and the animals. I need to share my life with someone, I see, and I am not sure why I did not see that before, except I did not see many things before. Back to the video editing.

When Life Happens. New Video Camera!

by Jon Katz
When Life Happens. Simon In June

Life happens.

When a tire goes flat.

Or a password doesn’t work

Or a deer jumps out

Or a tree falls

Or a computer won’t work

Or you back your car into another

Or your dog gets sick

Or your friend dies

Or your video camera breaks

Or someone you love

Is angry

When life happened, I used to panic,

And tell my story,

“Hey there! Life Happened! Woe Is Me!”

Wanted to flee, hand it off

To someone else

And now I am learning to close my eyes,

And smile, and bless life,

And kiss it on the nose,

And deal with it,

And move along, because a good life

Isn’t perfect, but happens Aand happens

Every Day

Ask Simon
