Poem: Do Not Speak Poorly Of Your Life

by Jon Katz
Do Not Speak Poorly Of Your Life
Do Not Speak Poorly Of Your Life

Listen to me for just one second,

the old toothless woman in the market

whispered to me as I past her bone

thin arm outstretched with a rusty tin cup,

her dirty rags shedding

clouds of dust.

“Give me a coin,” she said,” honor me,

give me my dignity,

and I will tell you some

wonderful secrets about life in this world.”

I had no quarter, only a silver dollar, and I reached into

my pocket and put it into her cup, and bowed to her,

and wished her peace and compassion.

She motioned for me to sit down on the ground, and I did.

and she shook a rattle at me, and reached for a crystal,

and beat her cup with a spoon.

“Do not speak poorly of your life,” she said, “or make a mockery of it.”

And then, she whispered, “fear is a ghost, you can put your finger right through his heart.”

And she waited, and laughed, and the most beautiful song came out of her mouth,

it turned the heads of everyone in the crowded market.

“Love is the point,” she said.

And she touched my forehead with her bony fingers, and looked me in the eye,

I felt my heart sing and jump.

Close your eyes for just a moment, she said,

and all your fears and fantasies will vanish.

And they did.

We said goodbye, and she clasped my hand,

“Tonight,” she said, “the moon and the stars

will argue over who will tuck you in tonight,

and kiss you on the cheek.”

Minnie And Red: Taking The Morning Sun

by Jon Katz
Taking The Morning Sun
Taking The Morning Sun

Minnie comes out of the barn every morning to take in the morning sun, if it is out. Red and I had just been out doing morning chores and I went to help Maria dig out the Dahlia garden. Red went over to Minnie and the two of them sat down together to consider the world and get warm – all of our animals are sun worshipers in cold weather. I was surprised to see the intense border collie and our newly three-legged barn cat seek one another out. I think Minnie is getting more social, Red too, perhaps.

There are lots of things to life the heart on a farm with animals.

Goodbye, Dahlia Garden

by Jon Katz
Into The Cold Storage Room
Into The Cold Storage Room

Our Dahlia garden was a wonderful and beautiful success, it brightened up the whole back yard behind the farmhouse. Dahlia bulbs have to be dug up and stored in the winter or they will perish, so today we dug them up, fed the stems to the donkeys and put the bulbs in three baskets and brought them into the basement.

This is a new marker for us of the Days Of Grace, the name the farmers give the time before autumn and the onset of winter, the Dahlia bulbs are in our cold storage room in the basement, in the Spring we will expand the Dahliar garden, I loved ours.

Devon From Ohio Meets Simon

by Jon Katz
Devon From Ohio
Devon From Ohio

Devon from Ohio’s family asked if he might stop at Bedlam Farm during a visit to the area, and I was happy to see him here. He loved Lenore and the donkeys, he hung out with Lulu and Simon who were especially loving and generous with him, he had a huge bag of carrots, which helped smooth the way.

I think Simon had another life as a family farm donkey, he is so good with young and with people with special needs. It was great fun to have Devon here, he is a sweet and happy young man.

Frieda’s Time: The Second Chance Dog

by Jon Katz
Frieda's Time
Frieda’s Time

It is time for Frieda’s remarkable story to be told, and on November 12, “Second Chance Dog: A Love Story” will be published by Ballantine/Random House and she will have her moment in the sun. Frieda has had an amazing life, several books worth, and I have been lucky enough to research and recreate and write. I can tell the story of her hard time as a guard dog in an upstate New York town, her abandonment in the Adirondacks, her saving a family from a fire, her adoption by Maria, and the great role she played in our coming together.

The book chronicles the story of two people and a dog who all got a second chance at life. If you wish to pre-order the book from Battenkill Books, my local bookstore (or call them at 518 677-2515), Maria and I will personalize it and you will be eligible to win a free bag of dog food (we are giving away 100, a free book and some printed and matted photos of Minnie and her hen friends.

The book is already in it’s second printing, I am organizing a slam-bag online book tour, podcasts, videos and give-a-ways to come. I am hoping to bring Frieda to the book launch reading at Battenkill Books at 7 p.m., on November 12. Interviews begin next Monday, Ted Talk taping next Saturday. Here we go again.
