Tomorrow, My First Prom Planning Meeting. Casino Night With Chocolate Dollars?

by Jon Katz

Tomorrow morning, I’m heading to Bishop Maginn High School to sit in on my first ever high school prom planning meeting.

The students are thrilled that the Army of Good has raised nearly $7,000 to have the prom they want and deserve on the eve of the school’s closing for good on June 11.

They have been brainstorming and thinking for days now, and I’m eager to hear where they are.

The June 11 date has been approved, and so far, the most popular idea is a  Casino night with slot machines and gold-papered chocolate dollars.

They are also happy to be able to hire a caterer and spare their mothers and father the cooking chores.

One of them e-mailed me and asked me to thank you again for their generosity. “This means so much to us; this is the last time we will all be together as classmates, and the last time we will ever see the school. Thank you, thank you.”

Bishop Maginn is closing for good in June; the refugee program will move to Catholic High School in Latham, N.Y., Sue Silverstein, the refugee students (and me, and Zinnia, and sometimes, Maria.)

Some of the students are getting their tuition paid in full; some may need some help. I’ll keep everyone posted. Bishop Maginn never denied anyone entry over money. I don’t know what the new school’s policy will be.

We have flipped the school mood from somber and grim to excitement and enthusiasm.  The prom fund was broke, as usual. The school will go out in style.

The meeting is at noon. I’ll report back when I get home. I hadn’t thought of a Casino Night, but it sounds great fun.

My work at Bishop Maginn has been among the most satisfying and meaningful of my life. I  hope to be able to continue it in the new school, the principal is excited about our work, and he and I will meet shortly. He loves helping refugee students, and he loves the idea of Zinnia working at the school.

I hear the best things about him, and I will be very pleased to continue working with Sue Silverstein, who is directing the prom meetings.

  1. Just curious, what’s happening with the rest of the teachers and with the administrative and other staff? I hope everyone “lands” safely.

    1. Kathryn, that’s not something I’m privy to or involved with. I’m must involved with the children and their needs. I hope everyone lands safely also.
